Harris Sawyer holding the trophy
All those blood, sweat, and tear-filled training sessions have finally paid off for Harris Sawyer of North Devon Kick-Boxing, based at G4 Gym in Bideford.
Just one year ago, Harris entered this very competition for the first time. His inexperience showed—he was disqualified after accidentally knocking out his opponent with an illegal technique in the heat of the moment.
The disappointment was bitter, but his concern for his opponent, Riley (who thankfully was okay), marked the beginning of a friendship. They went on to meet at several competitions, forging a respectful bond.
Fast forward to June 2025: Harris became the World Martial Art Committee UK Open Kick-Boxing Champion in the 15–17 years, male, under 75.9kg category. This national competition, held in Gloucester, marked a turning point. From a rocky start, Harris was now gaining confidence and momentum.
Then came a chilly Sunday in November, Harris returned to the World United Martial Arts National Championships in Cheltenham—the event where his competitive journey began so badly.
Now, with a year of experience and five competitions under his belt, he was ready for redemption. Competing in the Cadets class (16–17 years, under 175cm), Harris battled through two tough fights to reach the final.
His opponent? Riley again! The match was hard-fought but very respectful—and this time, Harris WON the gold! With two UK national titles to his name, what’s the secret to Harris’s success?
He’s a product of North Devon Martial Arts, trained and coached by his father, Peter Sawyer, who brings over 30 years of experience across various clubs and disciplines. Harris fights for North Devon Kick-Boxing, where Jack first launched his competition career.
He also trains with Vikki and Steve from Mariners K1 Club in Barnstaple Boxing Club, and with Paul at Strike Martial Arts helping too. It’s a team effort with lots of great people helping him.
As the saying goes: it takes a family to make a child, but a village to raise one. Looking forward to 2026, Harris will represent the UK in Switzerland, taking his skills to the European stage.
