Aaron Bird and Kyle Davies
Bideford boxer Aaron Bird challenged for the Light Heavyweight’s IBO European and Silver Commonwealth Titles in Stoke on Saturday.
Bird faced hometown favourite Kyle Davies, who was undefeated on 10 fights with an impressive six knockouts to his name. Bird started the fight well behind his trademark jab, doubling it up to Nick the first round.
In the second, the right hand started to come behind the jab, frustrating his aggressive opponent. Davies had his breakthrough in the third round as a short right hand counter sent bird to the canvas.
Bird bravely boxed on and took a foothold back in the fight in round four as he dug in with combinations. The fight was being fought at a high pace in round five with both boxers having success before an overhand right from Davies sent Bird to the canvas one more time.
Although Bird made it too his feet the referee, waved the fight off and announced Davies the champion.
Manager Richard Grigg said: “We dared to be great and just came up short. After only seven fights as a pro, Aaron Bird rolled the dice by taking on unbeaten Kyle Davies for the IBO European and Silver Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Titles.
“Training camp and preparation went perfect and we were full of confidence approaching the fight. Bird got caught big early and despite fighting back like a warrior, he never recovered to get back into the fight.
“Thanks to Black Flash Promotions for giving us the opportunity and putting on a great show, creating top exposure early on in Bird’s career that will benefit him further down the line.
“It takes two to make a great fight, credit to Kyle Davies, these are real fighters that were willing to step up and put their undefeated records on the line. Davies put in a great performance and we wish him all the best in the future and are expecting big things.
“Nothing was lost for Bird just his pride dented, he still holds the Celtic Title and he will be back better than ever. We win and lose as a team, we are proud of Bird and this is just a small bump in the road.“
Pete Fitzgerald boxed in the quarter finals of the NAGBC championships in Chepstow, where he faced Welsh Champion Pat Davey. Fitzgerald had moments of succeed with fast Flurries but Davey got stronger as the bout went on to take the points decision.
