After all the excitement and the build up to a historic season in the National League 2 West Division, Barnstaple RFC can be extremely proud of their start at this new level.
Barum kicked off the campaign with a home win over Old Redcliffians but did slip to defeat at Exeter University in week 2. It was back to winning ways at Pottington Road on Saturday, as Barum trounced the Hornets 40-17.
Barnstaple grabbed the lead with a try from Matthew Gohl on just two minutes and that advantage was stretched by a further score from Brandon Moore. Hornets got on the board with an unconverted try but Brendan Darley then added a double, Henry Sellick notching the extras to give Barum a 28-5 lead at the break.
Ross Swales crossed early in the second period before the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the game, scoring twice to reduce the arrears to 33-17. Barum responded again to complete victory with a late score from Ben Jago.
Next up for Barum is a trip to Taunton Titans.
It was an unwanted weekend off for Bideford RFC, as they were given a home walkover against Exeter Saracens. The Chiefs return to action at Ivybridge on October 4.
Jordan Murray scored a superb hat-trick of tries, as South Molton beat Torrington 22-7 in a rain-swept local derby. Torrington host Ilfracombe on Saturday, with the Combe looking to build on to home wins. The game kicks-off at 2pm, giving plenty of time for everyone to enjoy England in the World Cup Final.
