Local MP Sir Geoffrey Cox KC paid a special visit to Bideford Boxing Club this week, meeting members of its Parkinson’s Boxing Group and experiencing first-hand the club’s growing role in supporting physical and mental wellbeing across the community.

The Parkinson’s Group forms part of the club’s inclusivity outreach, welcoming people managing Parkinson’s, stroke recovery, and other health conditions to take part in tailored non-contact boxing sessions.

Sir Geoffrey spent time speaking with members and coaches, including Inclusivity Ambassador Frankie Fry, who shared how boxing has been instrumental in his own recovery journey. He also chatted with club member Leanne Upton about the powerful role boxing plays in supporting mental health.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Sir Geoffrey even stepped into the ring for a few rounds on the pads with Dick Kersey MBE, much to the delight of those watching. "I was not expecting that – he’s got a good punch on him and potential!" said Dick.

Head Coach Rich Grigg took the opportunity to announce Dave Hewis as Boxer of the Month, who received his award from Sir Geoffrey during the visit.

Club Development Officer Kathy Murdoch said: "It’s not every day your MP comes to the club and really embraces what we’re trying to achieve. We were genuinely impressed by Sir Geoffrey’s enthusiasm for our inclusivity work – and I think he’s left with a new passion for boxing. We’d love to see him back in the ring again!"

The club continues to grow its outreach programmes, aiming to make boxing accessible to all, regardless of age, ability, or background.
