Bideford boxer Billy Stanbury is the new Southern Area Super Welterweight champion after a stunning and swift display.

Stanbury boxed former Southern Area champion and English title challenger Constantine Williams from London. The fight took place at the Mecca of British boxing, York Hall in Bethnal Green.

Wasting no time in the verified arena. Stanbury won the fight by first round technical knockout, meaning he is the new champion and boasts a record 12 fights undefeated, ranking him in the top 10 in Britain.

Billy Stanbury said: “As soon as the first bell went and within the first minute, I established my opponent’s strength, with that, I felt comfortable pressing forward on the front foot. With a handful of knockouts on his record, I had to be wary of his power and keep a tight guard.

“So, come two minutes of the first round, I found my range and timed him with a double jab back hand, which sent him crashing to the canvas. He got up at the count of 8 but the referee waved the fight off.

“At that moment, the crowd erupted and the atmosphere was electric from the hundred plus supporters that made the journey up to watch this fight. I felt overwhelmed with emotion and pride, to be the first person from North Devon to win the Southern Area belt is an incredible achievement.

“Moving forward, I am now in the mandatory position for the English Title. Therefore, I am now waiting for news from Goodwin Boxing on my next fight. Once I have picked up the English Title, I will have my eyes set firmly on the British Title, as it would be an absolute honour to win the Lonsdale belt.

“For now, I will be taking a few weeks off to recover by spending family time with my fiancé and son (Emma & Billy Jr).

“Lastly, I want to thank all of my sponsors and trainers that continue and support me through this journey. It means the world and without you, it wouldn’t be possible.”
