Aaron Bird preparing for televised title defence
Bideford Boxing Club is full of talent at the moment with champions across all age group and it looks set to be a busy year for the squad, starting with Aaron Bird travelling to Scotland to defend his Celtic Title on February 8.
Trainer and Manager Richard Grigg spoke about the opportunity, he said: “Massive news for Aaron Leopold Bird, his next fight with Bobby Morrell will be on BBC TV. Bird versus Morrell will be the main event for Bird’s first defence of his Light Heavyweight Celtic Title.”
“Boxing doesn’t feature on terrestrial TV very often, so this is a huge opportunity for Bird to show a big audience what he is capable of. The main event will be shown on BBC Scotland, BBC 2 Northern Ireland and BBC 2 Wales. The full show will be streamed live on BBC iPlayer.
“Massive credit needs to go to St Andrew's Sporting Club for staging such a great event and giving all the boxers this opportunity. Lastly a big shout out to Aaron Bird and a strong team behind him, Port Talbot Bulldogs and Bideford Boxing Club.
“Bird turned professional less than two years ago, with no big promotors or financial backing behind him. Professional boxing can be tough, but everyone involved has worked hard and believed in Bird throughout. Aaron Leopold Bird is now sitting here as the Celtic Champion, approaching the biggest fight of his career live on BBC TV.”
Aaron Bird added: “This is a dream come true, I have worked all my life for this kind of opportunity and I won’t let it slip. I have been on an intensive training camp, 10 weeks, 5 days a week, twice a day.
“Whilst others were resting at Christmas, I was working hard, I know a big performance on TV will push my career into the next level. We have a great squad at the moment, the sparring is hard and we are all winners bringing the best out in each other.
“I want to thank everyone who has put time into me and believed in me from day one, this is our time now and I’m ready to make a big statement on TV and bring my belt back to Bideford.”
