Anniversary celebrations for Special Olympics North Devon
A decade of sporting success for the North Devon group
Special Olympics North Devon celebrated their 10th anniversary with a party attended by athletes and volunteers.
Guests of honour included the Mayor of South Molton, Jacqui Footman, the Mayor of Barnstaple, Janet Coates, North Devon MP Ian Froome, and Councillor Frank Biedermann, along with Tom Mack from Active Devon, who helped to set up the group in 2014 with Val Hanover.
Val had previously set up two other Special Olympics groups in regions where she used to live, and we are very grateful that she did the same here in North Devon!
Val is something of a legend, having previously won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero award for her work in North Shropshire.
She stepped down as lead of the group last year but everyone was delighted she was able to attend the party and catch up with the athletes, a number of whom have been coming to the club for the full 10 years.
