The week of sport at Petroc College

Petroc College netball team made it four from four in the league with a hard-fought win over Richard Huish College.

Petroc were missing a couple of regular starters this week, the game started very evenly and after the first quarter the two sides were tied at 10-10. The coaches had some work to do during the break and a couple of tactical changes, along with a newfound ferocity, found the Petroc team edging slowly in front.

They eventually managed to pull away and take a 12-point win, 48-36 with both coaches commenting that the game was much closer than the scoreline reflected. The opposition gave the player of the match award to Petroc goalkeeper Teah Husband, and the team's votes went to Emma Baynham-Smith for her goal shooting.

Petroc volleyball hosted Exeter in the mixed league and another close match with Exeter edging it, 25-13, 25-17 and 25-15 to take a 3-0 win away with them. Coach Russell said: "A hard-fought duel with the quality of Exeter's first pass and variety of attack making the difference. Good performances and contributions by all the Petroc squad. Great to see these friendly sporting rivals do battle!”

Petroc football travelled to Bovey Tracey for their game against Trinity School, a grass pitch is a rare occurrence these days, so it was good to play on such a well-kept one. Trinity is a private school and Petroc faced up to a team of international students who were big, strong and aggressive, the card count, for them, of seven yellows and two sin bins over the game reflected this!

Petroc actually took the lead after absorbing a lot of pressure in the opening 15 minutes when Liam Martin broke through to be upended in the box and the penalty was duly despatched.

Unfortunately, Petroc conceded twice before half-time to go into the break behind. Trinity stepped up the pace after the break and were soon 4-1 in front until Jai Randall broke through and finished well. After that, Petroc competed well but made some costly errors to finish on the wrong end of a 7-2 scoreline.  It must also be added that Petroc conducted themselves in a professional manner through a tough encounter.
