Durrant Hotel hosts annual boxing festival

Bideford Boxing Club hosted its annual dinner at the Durrant Hotel featuring 12 action-packed bouts.

Senior boxer of the night went to Chloe Murphy, who beat Alina Lance from Grey Ranks on points. Murphy lost the first round giving up reach advantage. In the second and third, Murphy closed the gap with relentless pressure to seal the win.

Junior boxer of the night went to Billy Bedford, who beat Lance Cook from Bang Bang Boxing. Bedford set a high pace in the first switching attacks to the head in the body. In the second, Bedford smothered his range, giving Cook a chance to land big hooks. But Bedford changed tactics in the last getting back to his boxing scoring straight punches and moving his feet in and out of range effectively.

Tremayne Reeves was top of the bill in a great battle with Jack Bays from Lympstone. Reeves dominated the first scoring clean shots. Bays pulled himself back into the fight in the second, landing a big overhand right that wobbled Reeves. It was all to play for in the last with both boxers having success, a big combination at the final bell swayed the decision to Bays.

A local heavyweight bout had the crowd on their feet as Bideford boxers Sam Trickey and Andy Mitchell boxed each other. Trickey dominated throughout, showing superior power and work rate to get the points win but Mitchell never stopped trying and earned himself a standing ovation at the bell.

Another local clash saw David Quinn against Kyle Bwyzichi from South Molton. Bwyzichi won the first round, boxing and moving to show good footwork. In the second, Quinn began to cut the ring down, landing right crosses and left hooks. The pattern continued in the third as a big left hook landed to force a standing count on Bwyzichi in another dominant round for the Bideford boxer to gain the split points win.

Pete Fitzgerald was on the wrong end of a split decision loss to Johan Jonathan from St Pirans, despite a career best performance. Fitzgerald floated round the ring, enjoying lots of success in the first.

In the second, Jonathan speeded the feet up and worked in close quarters. The fight was in the balance going into the last, Fitzgerald went on the front foot, landing some crunching body shots in a bout that was hard to call at the final bell.

Marley Barnes wasn’t leaving anything tight as he walked through Rocco Weaver from Downend for all three rounds, showing great shot selection.

Riley Chappell started well against Cody Ward from St Pirans but struggled to deal with the reach advantage from Ward, who took over in the second half of the fight to take the points win.

Charlie Evans is looking one to watch for the future, giving experience away in a hard debut against Alfie Davis from Grey Ranks. Evans stepped up to the task though, after a tight first he took over with big left crossed and right hooks to the body. In the last, Evans had broke Davis down and was dominating giving Davis a standing count on the way to a unanimous win.

Tucker Mills started the night off against Dean Kelvin from Downend. Mills started well but had to pull out from injury at the end of the first round.

Port Talbot had two senior boxer on the bill. Brad Newbury stopped James Parker from Bang Bang boxing in spectacular fashion. But Vlad Avulanov couldn’t complete the double for the club as he lost to Tom Walland from Cullompton on points.

The night was supported by five pro boxers in attendance, Billy Stanbury (10-0), Conor Mcintosh (World title challenger), Aaron Bird and Stuart Phillips (Celtic Champions) and Harley Griffiths, who’s awaiting his debut.

Dylan Burston boxed in the Quarter finals of the NAGBC Championships against Home Counties Champion Hamed Singh. Burston started fast, pushing Singh back with combinations switching from head to body.

In the second, Singh stood his ground as the pair went toe to toe, gaps appeared towards the end of the round as Singh got rocked with a big left hook to receive a standing count. Burston carried on his dominance in the last, landing eye catching punches to win all three rounds and the unanimous victory.

Burston travelled to Llantristant for his semi-final against Charlie Bartlett from Panthers ABC. Burston dominated all three rounds, working well from head to body and showing great punch variation. The unanimous points win sealed his place in the British finals in Bridlington next weekend.
