Victory for Billy Stanbury
Bideford boxer too strong for Polish opponent
Billy Stanbury moved to 10 fights undefeated with a wide points victory in Swindon against highly ranked Polish Light Heavyweight Adam Cieslak.
Stanbury showed a great skill set from the off, hitting and not getting hit, using his range against Cieslak who found himself missing the target and getting caught with big counters.
The body shots came into play in the 2nd round, slowing Cieslak down on several occasions. In the 3rd, Stanbury began going through the gears landing fast flurries, continually hitting the target seeing Cieslak marked up around the eyes.
Stanbury maintained his pace in the 4th, rocking the tough Polish boxer on several occasions with big uppercuts. Another dominant round continued in the 5th with Stanbury showing great shot selection, demonstrating his wide range of skills and proving a class above.
Desperation set in for Cieslak in the last, he came out swinging but caused the Bideford boxer no problems, who showed great ring craft moving round the ring scoring at ease to bring the victory home.
Trainer Richard Grigg said: “I’m really proud of Billy, he’s getting better every time he fights. Adam Cieslak was a risky fight, Billy’s original opponent pulled out a week ago. No one was willing to come forward and fight, so basically it was Cieslak from Poland or not fight.
“Billy moved up three weight divisions (super welterweight to light heavyweight) and boxed someone with twice his experience and out skilled and overpowered him. This shows what a real prospect Billy is, he has passed all the tests and is ready for titles now”.
Alex Dovell topped the bill in Plymouth in a rematch with Ryan Gaffney from Mayflower. Gaffney proved a slippery customer showing improvements from the first fight hitting and moving to take the first round.
Dovell upped his work rate in the second round and had success winning the round, cutting the ring off and landing flurries. It was all to play for in the last in a back and forth round, it was Gaffney who finished stronger though, landing crisp right hands to sway the split points decision to the Plymouth boxer.
