Riviera Cup provides a learning tool for young boxers

Barum Boxing Club also enjoyed a superb weekend at the Riviera Box Cup in Torbay, which was an excellent competition that’s really well ran.

We had mixed results for our boxers but each bout they had was very good in their own way. Megan Woods was up first boxing against a former opponent and this was a fast-paced bout with both girls giving their all. Megan was picking her shots very well and showing off her repertoire of shots. Her opponent kept on trying when many would have stopped, so full credit there but Megan won unanimously.

Next up was Joe Lane, he took his bout the day before as I received a phone call to say a lad had pulled out to box and they needed a match as they had travelled from Liverpool. They are a good club and I knew it would be a tough bout but you learn in these situations as a boxer and as coaches.

Again, this was an excellent contest with both lads looking to get their shots off with venom. A lot of great shots were landed and at the end it went to a split decision and Jake won it, so well done to Jake and well done Joe for taking the bout, it won’t be long before he will start stopping his opponents.

Liam was up last against a strong fit lad the year up and again this was a great all action bout with Liam’s opponent pressing and Liam countering and this was fast paced throughout the three rounds. It was very competitive and Liam lost on points. Liam barely gets caught but yesterday he was caught a couple times and that’s something we will sort out this week in the gym, as we will with Joe and Megan. These bouts showed what we will polish up on as we head to Ireland for the Emerald Box Cup this week for three days of competitive action.

We are so proud of our boxers and team who give everything, they are not divas and take their lumps like true champions and always want to improve, which, with that attitude, they will and are. We are always learning as coaches as well, it’s all part of the big picture and these young people are on point.
