Devon defeat Cornwall in Holsworthy show

Bideford Boxing Club had two boxers called up to represent Devon in the contest with Cornwall for the H44 memorial shield. The event was held in Holsworthy and a celebration to remember the time when former World Heavy Champion Joe Louis boxed in the town.

Rocky Grigg boxed against Johan Hawthorn and put in an explosive performance to win by a second-round technical knockout. Hawthorn, the bigger of the two, tried using his size, rushing at Grigg with flurries of punches, but the Bideford boxer stayed composed, showing good footwork to make his opponent miss and set up his own punches.

Grigg slowly broke Hawthorn down, finding gaps with a left hook to the body and overhand right to force a standing count towards the end of the round. In the second, the pair traded off but it was Grigg’s power that shone through as Hawthorn found himself on the ropes, taking another standing count from a barrage of punches.

Grigg sensed the finish, setting it up a left hook to the body before switching it to the head, rocking Hawthorn and forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Pete Fitzgerald had a rematch with Kayden Tremeling. It was a back and forth bout throughout with both boxers showing some classy skills. Tremelling won a tight first with his counter punching ability. Fitzgerald dominated the second round as he brought his right hand into play.

The last round was eagerly contested as both boxers stepped in and out of range with fast flurries. The Cornishman Tremeling just finished stronger before the final bell to edge a tight points decision.

Devon boxers raised the H44 memorial shield at the end of the night with a 6-5 win in a well contested night of boxing.
