Victory for Petroc football team to top table
The men’s football team at Petroc College started 2024 with another great win to stay top of the table, writes Jason fern.
After a slightly slow start where GK George Evans made a great reaction save to keep the scores 0-0, Petroc gradually grew into the game and assert themselves on SGS. Petroc took the lead in the 34th minute from a corner with Alex Symcox poking the ball home.
SGS responded well and got their rewards with a fantastic breakaway, cross into the box and brilliant header into the corner. Petroc emerged from half-time on the front foot and Austin Bull finished from close range to restore the lead.
As the game progressed, Petroc started to take more control, creating chances and got a vital third goal with a fantastic run down the left wing from Joe Miles to set up Liam Martin to tap home. This gave Petroc the breathing space to see the game out, grabbing a late fourth to cement their position at the top of the College Championship.
Sadly, the next scheduled game against Exeter 2nds was abandoned after 20 minutes with the Exeter ‘keeper sustaining a serious looking injury to his ankle, Petroc would like to wish the player all the best and a speedy recovery. This game will be replayed in the near future.
Petroc netballers travelled to Taunton to take on Bridgewater 2nds, Petroc were quite short handed but still managed to put on a really good display. Using excellent linkage all the way down the court and having overall shooting stats of an 86% success rate, Petroc proved too strong and took a 60-13 win!
Player of the match went to Kiah Blair for her awesome interceptions to turn the ball over in defence. Petroc sit top the division, tied with Torquay Academy but with a game in hand.
Petroc Basketball have actually played three games since Christmas, all at home, starting with a superb display to see off Exeter 53-36, an excellent effort against a strong side. The next game was a 40-59 defeat against Truro 2nds but they bounced back to beat Plymouth Patriots 52-33.
