A project aimed at helping the long-term unemployed in North Devon has received funding from National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED).

The financial support has been awarded to Torridge Growing Together, which provides work experience and CV coaching to vulnerable people in Bideford and Torridge.

The grant is enabling two work coaches to offer guidance on plugging skills gaps, creating CVs, and finding work experience or volunteering opportunities.

Caroline Gale, of Torridge Growing Together, said: “Through this project we are enabling people who have been out of work for a long time, or some who have never had paid work, to make their first steps towards employment.

“We’re encouraging them to analyse their skills, interests and personality traits, work out best ways to overcome barriers to employment and to develop new skills and confidence through trial volunteering or work experience and finding suitable courses.”

Thanks to the funding from NGED’s Community Matters Fund, Torridge Growing Together has already seen positive transformations.

Ms Gale shared that 13 individuals have joined the Growing Towards Employment programme, and many have reported increased confidence.

In addition to employment support, the grant has allowed the organisation to expand its gardening-related activities.

A new minibus now provides transport for rural participants, enabling them to engage in these activities.

Recently, a group visited Clovelly Court Gardens to learn horticultural skills from the head gardener and gain insight into how a commercial garden operates.

Ellie Patey, NGED’s Community Engagement Manager, said: “The aim of our funding was to boost skills and employability and it’s fantastic to see how Torridge Growing Together is bringing such positive change through a person-centred approach.”

Since its launch in 2021, NGED’s Community Matters Fund has supported over 400 charities and community groups across the South West.
