Oliver (right) will be raising funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society
A Bideford teenager living with multiple sclerosis has embarked on a journey to raise awareness and funding for the MS Society, despite facing his own health challenges.
At just 18-years-old, Oliver Lovering, alongside his sister Chloe, 15, has founded Oliver’s Journey - a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising funds and awareness for research into treatments for multiple sclerosis.
Oliver's journey began with struggles in his childhood and adolescence.
Facing educational hurdles and grappling with undiagnosed conditions, Oliver persevered through challenges that many would find overwhelming.
Diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Oliver also began experiencing mobility and vision issues, which ultimately led to a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at the age of 18.
Despite the setbacks and health concerns, Oliver remains steadfast in his determination to make a difference.
Their first event will be a coffee morning held at the Windsor Arms, Bradiford at 10.30am tomorrow (Saturday, March 16).
Reflecting on his journey, Oliver shared: "All I want to do is try to make a difference to those living with MS."
His sister Chloe added: "I am very proud of my brother for what he's been through, going through, and hopes to achieve."
The MS Society has provided resources and materials for their fundraising efforts, including leaflets, collection tins, and merchandise.
Chloe has also taken the initiative to order various items, such as wristbands, pins, badges, and clothing, to sell and raise awareness for the cause.
Oliver's motivation to raise funds came after he became aware of the high cost of stems from his recognition of the significant financial strain associated with MS treatments.
This included essentials such as MRI machines, blood tests, and treatments, prompting his desire to contribute towards alleviating this burden and supporting efforts to find a cure.
Sarah-Jane Parker, Oliver’s mum said: “Being his mum I am supporting him and his sister fully with their venture. At the moment myself, Oly and Chloe are preparing for our coffee morning by baking cakes etc.
“Oly’s step mum and his dad are also baking cakes and will be supporting him all the way too. Oly after realising the costs of things like running an MRI machine, blood tests and treatments to name a few decided he wanted to raise money to help with these costs and to help fund a cure and stop MS.”
Looking ahead, the family is gearing up for a series of engaging events, though exact details are still being ironed out.
Their plan is to hold a coffee and cake sale, this time held near Bideford.
Additionally, they will also be looking to do sponsored walks and table-top sales.
