A former Gazette journalist is lacing up his running shoes to take on the TCS London Marathon this April.

Matt Smart, who worked at the North Devon Gazette as a reporter and sports editor, is using his place for the world-famous marathon on Sunday, April 26 to raise money for North Devon Hospice.

The 36-year-old got the running bug during his time at the Gazette, where he went from covering events like the Bideford 10k to running in them.

Matt, who now works in communications, said it was an easy decision to raise money for the hospice while completing an event that has long been on his bucket list.

He said: “My running journey started at the Gazette covering local races. After having enough of being a spectator, I went from puffing my way around Rock Park after work to running in events like the Bideford 10k.

“The London Marathon has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I’m delighted to finally get the chance to do it, all while raising money for a truly worthy cause in North Devon Hospice.

“As a Gazette journalist it was always a pleasure to champion the hospice, promote their fundraising events and appeals and shine a spotlight on their incredible work and the people who support it.

“It’s a truly vital part of our community and it will be a pleasure to run around London with a North Devon Hospice vest on.”

Much of Matt’s training has seen him battle the elements on the Tarka Trail during a winter with plenty of wet weather and gale force winds. He is hoping all that hard work will help him to achieve a marathon time he can be proud of.

He said: “Training for a marathon is tough, but there are so many apps, guides and blueprints you can draw on to make it easier.

“But there’s no manual for coming to terms with life-limiting illness for you or a loved one and that’s why the hospice’s support is so crucial.”

Becky Brennan, community fundraiser at North Devon Hospice, said: “Everyone at North Devon Hospice is incredibly proud of Matt and the entire team as they take on this amazing challenge.

“Training for and completing the London Marathon is no small feat and to do so while raising vital funds for our local hospice makes it even more special.

“The dedication and commitment Matt has shown, reflect the spirit of our community and the support he is generating will help us continue to provide compassionate end-of-life care to patients and their families across North Devon, when they need it most.

“We’re looking forward to cheering him and the rest of #TeamNDH every step of the way in London on Sunday, April 26!”
