West Buckland School has been chosen to receive an International Green Apple Environment Award for its many environmental achievements and drive for sustainability.

Selected from more than 700 entries worldwide, the school will be honoured at a prestigious ceremony in the House of Lords on November 17.

The school says it is deeply committed to advancing sustainability, both through its day to day running and by inspiring future generations.

This has included significant investment in renewable energy and environmental stewardship, such as the installation of biomass boilers, the planting of more than 4,000 trees in recent years and the development of a solar field. West Buckland also maintains more than 20 acres of wildflower meadows.

The school has launched initiatives to reduce food waste and hosts an annual Green Futures Day, which encourages students to explore sustainable career paths and environmental innovation. This year, West Buckland School celebrated its first Sustainability Festival too.

West Buckland has been invited to accept Green World Ambassador status, which includes the opportunity to have its project published in The Green Book - a leading international reference on environmental best practice - so organisations around the world can learn from others’ success.

The school has also been invited to represent the country at the Green World Environment Awards.

The International Green Apple Awards are run by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-profit group founded in 1994 to recognise, reward and promote environmental excellence worldwide.
