The eagerly-awaited Bram staple Fair returns next week to take its place as one of North Devon’s biggest calendar events.
The fair is delivered by Barnstaple Town Council in partnership with the Showman’s Guild and each year blends traditional ceremony with all the excitement of the fun fair, culminating in Barnstaple Carnival.
The fairground itself and all the funfair rides, sideshows and food stalls will this year be at its new location on Seven Brethren car park, next to Tarka Leisure Centre, from next Wednesday (September 17) to the Saturday.
It will all begin with the traditional Fair Proclamation and ceremony on Wednesday at 11am at the Guildhall. The ceremony led by the mayor and councillors marks the official opening of the Fair. The proclamation will be live-streamed and residents are invited to attend the screening at Barnstaple Library and Barnstaple Museum.

After the fair lunch, the mayor, councillors and guests will be off to the fair itself, to begin the festivities and enjoy a go or two on dodgems and perhaps some of the more white knuckle rides!

This year, Barnstaple Town Council is placing a stronger emphasis on community involvement. The fair luncheon will be held in the Pannier Market and catered by the Benita Project, a Community Interest Company (CIC) that provides meals, company and friendship.
Local charities that have made a positive impact in Barnstaple have been invited to take part, following a public vote on the council’s Facebook page.
The Mayor of Barnstaple, Councillor Janet Coates said: “Barnstaple Fair is a tradition that has brought people together for centuries. It remains an important part of our town’s identity, and this year we want it to feel as inclusive and community-focused as ever.
“We are grateful to the Showman’s Guild for their continued support in keeping this historic event alive for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
An accompanying exhibition at the Pannier Market will also run until Saturday, September 20, showcasing the history of Barnstaple Fair as well as more information about Barnstaple Carnival, which brings Fair Week to a close on the Saturday evening with the procession at 6pm and fireworks at around 8pm.
