Staff at a well-known Barnstaple business have swapped fiscal forecasts for flour and spreadsheets for sultanas as they prepare to bake up a storm of cake delights for an Afternoon Tea in aid of a breast cancer charity on Friday (August 15) – with all welcome.
The headquarters of wealth manager Philip J Milton & Company Plc at Choweree House in Boutport Street will be offering tea and a wide selection of tasty cakes and jams from 2pm, in return for a donation to Breast Cancer Now.
The charity is close to the hearts of organisers Vivienne Fry and Sarah Murray, who both have family members who have had to deal with the terrible disease.
This August, the charity is inviting individuals, groups or organisations to host their own Afternoon Tea and raise money to help pay for research into beating breast cancer, provide support and specialist nurses and campaigns for the best services and care.

Sarah felt she wanted to do something to help after a close cousin of her husband had to have a lumpectomy following a mammogram and then sadly a mastectomy, but is thankfully now doing well.
Sarah said: “She lives in Canada - I have met with her a couple of times and we keep in touch and so this charity event resonated with me.
“Our Managing Director Philip Milton kindly agreed to hold the Afternoon Tea in our board room here. I know his mum too has also had the disease, surgery and treatment. I enjoy baking and will be making coffee and walnut cake while one of our advisors, Scott Pickard, is making the scones in the office kitchen on the day.”
Philip added: “I was only too happy to help when Viv and Sarah asked me – anything we can do to help beat this disease or at least ensure better diagnosis and treatment for patients is always worthwhile.
“Sadly very few families remain untouched by cancer. Breast cancer is far too common but it can be beaten especially if caught early, so the work cancer charities and our NHS do is vital.
“So please do join us for afternoon tea and make whatever donation you feel is appropriate.
“I understand various staff will be busy baking at home and Helen does a mean lemon drizzle which will be on offer – I have been told to stay away from the kitchen as she has seen my previous efforts!”
Choweree House can be found at 21 Boutport Street in Barnstaple, opposite the Green Lanes Shopping Centre car park entrance.
