Barney to Beach is back this September as people are invited to walk or run from Barnstaple to Crow Point to raise money for Families in grief and the Wave Project North Devon

The start of Barney to Beach is in Barnstaple town centre.

Two North Devon charities are teaming up again this September to host a popular fundraising walk or run that invites people to trek or jog from town to coast.

Barney to Beach returns on Sunday, September 14 and sees participants make their way from Barnstaple’s Pannier Market along the Tarka Trail and through sand dunes to finish on the shore at Crow Point.

It follows the success of the first ever event last year for Families in Grief and Wave Project North Devon, supporting children and young people struggling with grief and other mental health challenges.

Last year more than 200 participants took on the challenge, including individuals, teams and even entire families, so it is hoped even more will be encouraged to take part this year.

Barney to Beach covers a distance of 14 kilometres and will set off from the pannier market at 9am, taking in some stunning estuary scenery before meeting the coast.

Arron Kearney, who finished in the top three in 2024, said of last year’s event: “Taking part in Barney to Beach was an incredible experience. I loved the challenge, the stunning North Devon scenery and the amazing atmosphere created by everyone involved.

“Running for such a great cause made it even more special, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a rewarding event!"

Unfortunately, mental health concerns are on the rise among young people in the UK. One in five children experience social, emotional, or mental health difficulties and rates of teenage suicide and eating disorders have seen alarming increases in recent years.

Both Families in Grief and Wave Project North Devon step in when North Devon and Torridge families need support the most, delivering therapeutic interventions that set them up for a more positive future and helping them to manage the big feelings that come up after losing a loved one.

Jaz Bennett, co-ordinator of Wave Project North Devon, said: “We were thrilled to see such brilliant support from our wonderful North Devon community for this event in 2024. The beautiful route celebrates the stunning scenery of North Devon, and represents a challenging but achievable journey, not unlike that of the young people that both of our charities support.

“We really want to build on last year’s success, and invite you to join us from Town to Tide in 2025!”

There is coach transport available to the start line from the finish (and vice versa) and an event village at Crow Point featuring live music, breakfast tent, refreshments, and more.

Everyone who completes the journey will receive a medal and branded water bottle. For younger ones, there is also a children’s race at Crow Point at 11am.
