Devon County Council has launched a series of public engagement events across the county to gather residents’ views on the government’s plans to reorganise local government structures.
The campaign aims to give the people of Devon a chance to shape how local services will be delivered in the future amid proposals to abolish the existing two-tier system of county and district councils.
Council Leader Councillor Julian Brazil has been vocal about his reservations over the government's approach but recognises the reorganisation as an opportunity to improve public services.

“Government has decided to reorganise local government,” said Cllr Brazil.
“The number of councils in Devon is due to be reduced, with district councils and Devon County Council ceasing to exist and unitary authorities, which combine services, formed. I can’t say I’m particularly impressed with the process, but it does give us an opportunity to look at how services are delivered. It is our aim to try and achieve the best we can.”
The government announced last year its intention to replace the two-tier system with single unitary authorities, some led by elected mayors.
Local authorities affected must now engage with residents to gather input on new structures, with proposals due by 28 November. Following this, a formal government-led consultation will take place.
As part of this engagement, Devon County Council is hosting 28 roadshow events in towns across the county.
One upcoming event is at Barnstaple Library on Tuesday 5 August from 9.30am to 11.30am, where residents can meet the council’s engagement team and share their views.
Residents are being asked to prioritise public services most important to them and to highlight what they value and would like to see more of in their local communities.
Alongside the roadshows, the council is running an online survey open until mid-October, and will also meet with key stakeholders to ensure a wide range of views are considered.
“As we plan for the future, we want to hear from you,” added Cllr Brazil.
“Your feedback will help shape local policies, services, and investments to reflect the needs and priorities of our community.”
