Holsworthy Leisure Centre is now back to full operational use following a series of renovations carried out by Torridge District Council in partnership with Active Torridge.
The improvement works focused on boosting the energy efficiency of the building while also enhancing user comfort.
The upgrades were funded by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and the Rural Prosperity Fund, with additional support from Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund.
According to Torridge District Council, building fabric improvements to the pool roof, windows and doors have increased the centre’s thermal efficiency.

A new solar PV system has also been installed on the roof, which the council says will generate enough energy during the summer months to match the facility’s electrical running costs, particularly when ventilation and cooling demands are at their highest in the gym.
The changing areas have also undergone refurbishment, with a new combined air source heat pump and ventilation system introduced.
The council says this is expected to improve comfort and air quality within those spaces.
Due to the projected long-term benefits of the upgrades, councillors at a recent full council meeting voted not to proceed with additional alterations to the existing heating plant, which had previously been under consideration.
Councillor Lyndon Piper, Lead Member for Leisure at Torridge District Council, said: “The works have been critical in helping us to improve the sustainability of the pool, by helping to reduce both our operating costs and carbon emissions. The leisure centre is a key community resource for both young and old and these new upgrades will enable us to provide a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective place for future generations to enjoy.”
Chris Keeble, Chief Operating Officer at Active Torridge, added: "Swimming pools and leisure centres are essential community assets that play a crucial role in promoting physical activity and well-being. The enhancements being made to Holsworthy Leisure Centre will not only improve energy efficiency and promote environmental sustainability but also ensure the facility remains financially viable. These upgrades will create a welcoming space for the Holsworthy community to enjoy for many years to come."
