The Port of Bideford has successfully completed an assessment on its response to a major oil spill in the River Torridge.

The Oil Spill Response and Preparedness Assessment is carried out by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is a requirement for UK ports every three years.

It ensures staff are fully equipped and trained to respond swiftly and effectively to oil pollution incidents within their harbour limits.

Bideford demonstrated its operational readiness through a live deployment exercise, simulating an oil spill from a moored vessel.

The scenario tested both Tier 1 response capabilities — the Port’s own trained personnel and equipment — and Tier 2 support, provided by environmental response specialists Adler and Allan.

The exercise was also attended by staff from Royal Marines Instow.

The exercise saw containment booms to isolate the simulated spill, with assistance from the port pilot boat, as well as activation of a floating oil skimmer, designed to recover oil from the water surface.

It also provided on-the-job training and renewal of qualification for port staff. Support was provided by Adler and Allan, which supplied a fully equipped response truck and trained operatives to assist the local team.

The exercise was organised by deputy harbour master Martyn Bennett, who ensured it was both realistic and challenging. Following the exercise, the MCA awarded Bideford a ‘good’ assessment and a pass grade.

Councillor Bob Hicks, lead member for economy and estates at Torridge District Council, said: “It is great to see that the exercise was successful. I would like to thank the team, especially Martyn Bennett, for organising the exercise.

“Our team put in significant effort to achieve a positive outcome. We can be confident that if an oil spill were to occur in the Port of Bideford, we have a reliable group of qualified individuals ready to respond quickly and efficiently.”
