Pictures: Looking back at an ‘unforgettable’ North Devon Marathon experience

High temperatures and humidity gave runners an added challenge at the 2025 North Devon Marathon and Half Marathon

One of the toughest and most scenic races in the UK had an extra sting for runners this year but more than 750 competitors set off undaunted to raise money for North Devon Hospice.

The North Devon Marathon is now in its 17th year and offered runners the opportunity to tackle either a 10k, half marathon or full marathon along  the breath-taking North Devon coastline – taking in Woolacombe beach, Baggy Point, Croyde, Saunton, Morte Point, Lee and the stunning surrounding countryside.

It is hoped more than £40,000 will have been raised this year to help the hospice provide care and support for local people facing a life-limiting illness.

Runners travelled from across the UK and beyond to take on this unique challenge.

One of those was Billy McColl from Bournemouth, who said the event was even tougher than he expected!

“What a lovely route!” he exclaimed.

“The first half was really enjoyable with light rolling hills and stunning views over Woolacombe. But the second half... wow! It was seriously hilly and the terrain was much more demanding.

“I underestimated how tough it would be, but I pushed on to finish in five hours and 12 minutes.”

Bethany Ixer from Axminster, added: “This has been the best running event I’ve attended by a country mile.

“So many water stations throughout, marshals that cheer on the runners, and totally inclusive. I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did, but it was incredible.”

Local runners were well-represented on the podium, with Jack Hastings (above) of Bideford Athletic Club claiming the men’s 10k title in 40:53, and Helen Harbottle of South Molton Strugglers winning the women’s 10k race in 47:21.

In the half marathon, James Gillanders of London Frontrunners won the men’s race in 1:37:15, with Annabel Granger taking the women’s title in 1:47:43.

The full marathon men’s race was won by Jack Blackburn of Pontypridd Running Club in 3:19:36, while Naomi Shaw took the female full marathon prize in 4:23:44.

The event marked the final time that local running legend Simon Oliver would act as race director.

Simon is the founder of the North Devon Marathon, coming up with the stunning route himself after years of running in the area surrounding his Woolacombe home.

On the day, Simon’s incredible contribution was recognised with a special medal and framed picture of the route map, presented by North Devon Hospice chief executive Stephen Roberts.

Stephen said: “Simon Oliver has been an inspiration and should be very proud of what he has created with this event.

“Most importantly, the benefit to North Devon Hospice has been immense because over more than 15 years, hundreds of thousands of pounds have been raised for the cause.

“That means thousands of patients and their families have been cared for, when it matters most, thanks to Simon and the hard work he has put in. We want to say a huge thank you for everything.”

The hospice thanked all of the event sponsors, including Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks, TDK-Lambda, Zero 7 Telecoms, Vertu MINI Exeter, North Devon Coast National Landscape, Parkin Estates, St John’s Garden Centre and Panoptic.

Hospice events manager Georgia Bedgood added: “Thanks also go to the local landowners and of course, our wonderful volunteers. You all made this an unforgettable day.

“The funds raised will make a difference to hundreds of local people, allowing them to get the care they need when it matters most.”
