A Barnstaple veteran has been selected to take part in the Invictus Heroes Half Marathon in Romania this Saturday (May 31).

Conrad Goss will join the UK contingent of the Invictus Games Foundation at the urban running event for wounded, injured and sick (WIS) military veterans from around Europe.

The North Devon man, who lives with several disabilities linked to his time serving in the UK armed forces, is aiming to raise money and awareness for the Royal Marines Association (RMA) by taking part in the event.

Conrad is no stranger to fundraising, after completing several challenges in the past year, including a 100-mile relay between Barnstaple and Chivenor plus a charity trek to Everest Base Camp.

He served with the Royal Military Police (RMP), Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) and the reservists before medical issues forced him to leave military service in 1995.

Conrad found recovery through sport and began with the Royal Marine Rehab Triathlon in 2022, just three months after he had a pacemaker implant, which led to him being part of the Invictus Games programme.

The games themselves are now held every two years, with the next in Birmingham in 2027, but the organisation hosts or is part of a wide programme of events that support WIS veterans.

Organised by Invictus Romania, the Heroes Half Marathon sees invitations go out to the Invictus family across Europe.

Conrad said: “It is an honour to be selected for this event and I look forward to meeting up with comrades from the UK team and meeting WIS veterans from other nations as we all share many things in common, especially our spirit to continue and fight on daily despite the injuries we have suffered.

“Rehabilitation, maintenance and recovery through sport is a vital component in my life and plays a vital role for many wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans, so doing these events helps many us continue in life.”
