Comedian Aaron Twitchen’s debut book, Homo History, is out now.
Based on his Guardian recommended, Apple Top 10 podcast, A Matter of Pride, Homo History is a collection of fun, witty, but often heartfelt essays on the issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community today; the events that shaped LGBTQ+ culture and rights; and the heroes, icons and divas who have inspired, entertained, and stood with (and fought for) the queer community.
Homo History is a seriously funny breakdown of the biggest LGBTQ+ moments, from Stonewall to Donna Summer going disco. Blending history with personal anecdotes and packed with pop culture references, Homo History is an accessible, entertaining, and engaging look at key events in LGBTQ+ history and culture.
“I wanted to write a book that I’d enjoy reading, but which covered important events, whilst still being fun and funny” explained Aaron.
“I didn’t want to create something dull and dry, even though it explores serious issues such as Section 28, body image and conversion therapy. I wanted to celebrate queer culture, what we’ve achieved and how far we’ve come but still educate people about the issues that we’ve faced – and continue to face. It was really important to me that the book was interesting, informative, and didn’t shy away from the challenges facing LGBTQ+ people but which was still enjoyable to read.”'
Within days of publication, Homo History was ranked in the top twenty of Amazon’s LGBTQ+ Nonfiction chart, and in the top 10 of the Teen & Young Adult LGBTQ+ Nonfiction eBook chart.
Homo History is the perfect Pride present for newly out teens (and their families and friends), allies, or those who simply wish to gain a better understanding of LGBTQ+ history and culture, and to explore the issues that have (and continue to) impact upon the LGBTQ+ community and the milestone events that got us where we are today.
In addition to launching his book, Aaron is also preparing to take his latest solo show, Himbo, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Like the book, Himbo mixes serious issues with laughs, as Aaron talks about everything from being dumped by the love of his life during his best friend’s destination wedding, dating disasters, pop culture, conversion therapy, and blood donation.
Having lost control of his love life, Aaron hands over control of his Fringe show to the audience, allowing them to pick which topics will be covered in each show. It’s the ultimate live stand-up experience, and no two shows will be the same.
Homo History is available on Amazon as an eBook and paperback.
Copies of the book – including a limited number of luxe, full-colour, photo filled hardbacks – will be available as merch after Aaron’s solo shows (please note that the hardback is only available as post-show merch and is part of a strictly limited, one-off print run).
