A music event with deep local roots and sparkling international connections is taking place soon in North Devon.

Award-winning international harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry will soon perform and talk about some of her favourite music including works by the famous Devon-born 19th century harp maestro Elias Parish-Alvars at The Plough in Torrington.

Parish-Alvars was born in Teignmouth in 1808 and is one of the most famous musical sons of the town. He enjoyed a great international career and his innovative harp technique was admired by such iconic figures as Liszt, Mendelssohn, Berlioz and many others.

The evening will take place in The Gallery at The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington on Sunday, April 14, 2024. It is the latest in a series of talks and events presented by the Devonshire Association Music and Folklore Section, which promotes events profiling a wide variety of Devon Music.

The event title Harp Music from Devon and beyond reflects the style and nature of the evening. Elizabeth-Jane will take us behind the scenes of a range of her music, talking about her favourite pieces and her instrument, with a very special focus on our local hero, Parish-Alvars.

Devonshire Association Music and Folklore Section chairman Paul Wilson said: “We feel very lucky to have Elizabeth-Jane to present this significant event for us. In the intimate setting of the Plough Arts Centre Gallery it will feel like a house concert and absolutely ideal for being surrounded by all the lovely sonorities of close-up harp.”

Elizabeth-Jane said: “It’s been a wonderful journey researching the life of Devon-born Elias Parish Alvars, and I’m excited to share his story with the audience. It offers a fascinating insight into life in the 19th century, as well as being a touching tale in itself.”

The Plough are delighted to have a concert so focused on this rich Musical heritage of Devon. Elizabeth Jane will bring some scores and CDs for people to view and buy.

There will be a break for refreshments and The Plough café and bar will be open. Also a chance to learn about the Devonshire Association Music and Folklore Section.

The event starts at 3pm (doors 2.30pm) on Sunday, April 14, 2024, in The Gallery Space, The Plough Arts Centre, 9-11 Fore St, Great Torrington, Torrington EX38 8HQ.

Tickets are £14.00 or £10.00 for under 18s. To book tickets or receive other information please contact The Plough Arts Centre on 01805 624624.
