Leading figures across North Devon and Torridge have been wishing His Majesty King Charles well following the shock announcement of his cancer diagnosis on Monday evening.
Buckingham Palace said the King had been diagnosed with ‘a form of cancer’ while he was in hospital just over a week ago for a procedure for benign prostate enlargement.
Doctors spotted something else and in a statement, the palace said further diagnostic tests identified cancer, but there has been no information on which type the King has.
On advice from his doctors, King Charles has withdrawn from public-facing engagements but will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as normal.
The official statement added: “The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.
“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
North Devon MP Selaine Saxby said she was saddened to hear of the diagnosis and added: “On behalf of residents in North Devon, I wish His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with the King and the Royal Family during this tough time.”
Devon County Council leader John Hart said: “It was deeply shocking to hear of the King's diagnosis of cancer.
“We must all hope and pray that his doctors have caught it early and, after successful treatment, he will make a full and complete recovery.
“I am sure everyone in Devon would want to send him and all the Royal Family their very best wishes for the difficult months ahead.”
North Devon Council leader Ian Roome said he was deeply saddened and his heart went out to the King and his family. He said: “I sincerely hope for his speedy recovery and send my thoughts and well wishes to him.
“The King is a beloved figure, and his strength and resilience will undoubtedly inspire many. We stand with him in solidarity and offer our support in any way possible.”
Torridge District Council leader Ken James echoed that and said: “On behalf of everyone at Torridge District Council I would like to wish His Majesty the King all the best as he undergoes treatment. We all hope that he has a full and healthy recovery.”
