A serving soldier at RMB Chivenor is taking the fight to cancer after four of his family and friends were hit by the terrible disease.

Corporal Alexander Fleming, aged 28, took on a daily running challenge throughout November to dedicate 100 miles in honour of each of them and raise money online for Cancer Research UK.

Alex, a member of 24 Commando Regiment Royal Engineers, based at Chivenor, has been running more than 13 miles a day before and after work, mostly in the dark and in all weathers.

His life has been touched by cancer more than most, including the loss of a good friend and mentor. He said: “Avi passed last year from cancer and her family was devastated. This was a sickening discovery to hear from friends as Avi was always full of life and a great person. She was so delicate and kind-hearted, she would often treat me as a son.”

More recently his aunt Heidrun was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and is currently receiving treatment.

He added: “Another of my close friends was diagnosed with testicular cancer and received multiple treatments over a year, to finally only now recover but his wife and young son, were once again devastated from the news.

“Cancer is not easy to avoid and truly brings you to tears and makes you question your entire life. Imagine being told you only have a couple years to live, what would you do”

Earlier in 2023 it hit very close to home when his mother-in-law Larissa was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 55 and is also receiving treatment.

It came as a great shock to the family and Alex’s wife Lara, as well as their two daughters Malia and Lyla. It also means they could be more at risk of hereditary breast cancer in the future.

Alex said: “Statics show that one in two people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.

“I personally believe this static is too high and more emphasis on developing treatments must be made.”
