Petals will be scattered on the river in the centre of Barnstaple tomorrow (Friday, November 24) in a poignant moment to remember all those who have lost their lives to domestic abuse and all who continue to suffer or live with the trauma.

The solemn occasion at 11am on the Square by the museum will be hosted by members of Soroptimist International Barnstaple and District, as they have for many years, with all welcome to join them and pay their respects.

In partnership with North Devon Against Domestic Abuse (NDADA), it is held on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and marks 16 days of activism in a global campaign to raise awareness and support victims.

NDADA estimates there are 36,000 cases of domestic abuse in Devon and the charity receives some 1,000 to 1,100 referrals a year, with many cases are never reported.

Event organiser Irene Hockin said: “We have held out annual Petal Scattering event on the banks of the River Taw for many years, to raise awareness to domestic abuse in all its forms, and to assure those men, women and children who are victims that there is support available to them.

“This is always a very poignant event and we invite anyone who wishes to join us.”

Hannah Ashford, chief executive of NDADA, added: “NDADA attend the Petal Scattering Event every year to remember the lives lost due to violence against women and girls.

“Due to the nature of our work, some staff members will be remembering those whose lives have ended too soon due to domestic abuse who they may have had direct contact with; not necessarily a client they have worked with but often a friend or family member. Often the lived experience of those affected by domestic abuse fuels their passion and drive within their varied roles.”

NDADA runs the only refuge for domestic abuse victims in the county of Devon and it is literally a life-saver for many.

All are welcome to attend the Petal Scattering event on the Square next to the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon on Friday at 11am.

Anyone suffering from domestic abuse or who knows of someone else who is trapped in such a situation can report abuse by calling the police on 101, seek support call North Devon Against Domestic Abuse on 01271 370079.
