Barnstaple town clerk Rob Ward, together with son Daniel and daughter Rebecca, is cycling the length of Great Britain, and in doing so will be raising funds for the Mayor’s charities North Devon Hospice and The Veterans Charity.

Rob and family are setting off from Lands End on Saturday, September 16, and all being well they are scheduled to arrive in John O’Groats on Thursday, October 5. They plan to pass through Barnstaple on Tuesday, September 19, at approx. 9.30am to meet up with local well-wishers for the remainder of their trip. It’s a first for a Barnstaple Town Clerk, who is using his vacation to boost his fitness whilst raising funds for charity.

Rob Ward said: “I’ve always been a keen cyclist, and enjoy cycling to work, but this time I’ll be going just that little bit further! It was my daughter’s idea originally, she seemed to think it would be a good way for the family to celebrate my 60th birthday! I can think of better ways, but I’m always up to taking on a challenge. I’m delighted that in doing so an opportunity has arisen to support these charities and the wonderful work they do in our local community. Thank you everyone for your support.”

Barnstaple Town Mayor Louisa York said: “What an epic journey this is, and I’m delighted that Rob is able to raise funds for our charities. Here’s wishing him and his family well. Please support them by making a donation. The charities do essential work in our community and rely on the generosity of the public to be able to survive.”

The North Devon Hospice is reliant on donations. They provide specialist care and support for people with a life-limiting illness, looking after both the ill and their loved ones. The Veterans Charity also rely heavily on the public’s generosity. They provide support to Veterans who find themselves battling hardship and distress, assisting with essentials such as food, utilities support and clothing.
