The house currently houses a launderette, an office and 14 bedrooms
A launderette and multi-occupancy building in Woolacombe could be turned into flats if North Devon Council approves.
It is considering plans by Kelford Cafes Ltd to convert the ground, first and second floors of Lauderdale, an end of terrace property in South Street, into six one-bedroom flats for single people.
This house currently has a launderette, an office and 14 bedrooms and is classified as an HMO (house in multiple occupation) so the number of people living in the property, if it was converted, would fall.
All six flats will have an open plan kitchen, living and dining room with one bedroom and a bathroom.
Agents for the applicant architects, Peregrine Mears, said the external appearance of the building will remain largely unchanged. The only alterations proposed are the addition of two new windows, one new rooflight and the modifications of three window and door openings.
“There will be few new materials used externally but any that are used will match that of the existing building – render and brick,” they said.
They added that the proposal, expected to be decided by officers under delegated powers, would contribute to the town’s housing stock requirement.
“Where the majority of properties are larger, the proposals of smaller one bed dwellings meets the range of needs within the community. The site is within a short distance of the centre of Woolacombe, which will encourage residents to walk to local amenities.
“The creation of these dwellings will help the local community by providing permanent dwellings at a more affordable level thus helping the local housing stock.”
North Devon is short of permanent and affordable homes, whilst the number of holiday lets remains high. Last year, the district council launched a project to bring empty homes back into use to help the housing crisis, and local MP Selaine Saxby says housing is her 'number one issue'.
