Independents have remained the largest group on Torridge District Council but with a slight weakening of their numbers.

Counting is now over at the Atlantic Racquet Centre in Bideford for the local elections after starting on Friday morning and the overall picture remains similar on the district council.

The independents now have 16 of the council’s 36 seats, a reduction of three from their previous 19.

The big gain is for the Liberal Democrats, who won six seats to take them up to eight.

The Conservative Party lost three of their nine seats, leaving them on six and Labour lost on of their three seats.

The Green Party were the beneficiaries, doubling their number of seats from two to four.

Current council leader Ken James retained his seat on Milton and Tamarside.

The voter turn out for Torridge was 33 percent – just a fraction less than the turn out for North Devon.

Parish council seats were also contested yesterday, with three elections held where councillors were elected unopposed due to low numbers of candidates. For the Torridge district and parish results online CLICK HERE
