There was a significant fire in Bideford High Street this morning.

The fire in a three-storey building on Bideford High Street involved a business and the flats above it.

Fire Control received a number of calls at around 5.30am today and flames were seen coming from the roof when firefighters arrived.

Neighbouring flats were evacuated by Devon and Cornwall Police while Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service firefighters tackled the blaze.

A police spokesperson said: "We would urge the public and motorists to continue to avoid the area which is still busy with emergency service personnel.

"Closures will remain in place and police await instruction from the Fire Investigator in relation to if this is a suspicious incident that requires a police investigation.

"We suggest that members of the public who wish to access services or businesses within the affected area of the lower High Street contact the relevant companies via phone or email in the first instance.

"All agencies involved would like to thank the public for their patience during this ongoing incident and it’s hoped access and business can be returned to normal as soon as the area is safe for all."

Ten fire engines from stations across the county, an aerial ladder platform, water bowser, command unit, support unit, ambulance teams and police officers attended the scene. Police used drones to assess the scene.

Six breathing apparatus wearers, three hose reel jets and three safety jets were in use at the height of the fire.

As of 10.10am breathing apparatus use has been discontinued, fire crews are dampening down hotspots and salvaging items from inside the building, working with local businesses.

An official survey of the building's condition is to be completed shortly.
