SIR - Rubbish disposal is very much the topic of the hour. Our political masters in Europe are making landfill a very expensive option. One recent solution has been to use the empty return freight space from imports of electricals, toys etc to export our rubbish to the Third World. The receiving poor communities turn a blind eye to the toxic considerations of waste disposal and planning is in the pocket of the local leadership. With a serious downturn in imports expected, Third World disposal will decline. Our councils are keen to avoid penal costs for landfill and are desperately seeking cheap alternative disposal options. If agreed and established they could suck in rubbish from far and wide and generate income instead of cost.Fortunately Third World solutions are not an option in this country although given the recent Barnstaple incinerator news is that wishful thinking on my part?Tony Martin, South Molton.
