FAMILIES and members of the care team at Little Bridge House were given a real treat when they received a visit by singing sensation Elkie Brooks.Elkie, who has made her home in the South West for the last 20 years, stopped by for a private visit and tour of Children's Hospice South West's Fremington-based hospice during Children's Hospice Week, a national annual awareness and fundraising event for all children's hospice services in the UK.She spent time chatting to parents and children while joining in some of the fun in the messy play area and special sensory room before relaxing in the family dining area with a home-made cream tea. There was also time for a tour of the multi-sensory 'Narnia' garden, which recently won the top landscaping award in the 2008 South West in Bloom Awards.Elkie, whose musical career has spanned nearly five decades, said: "Before visiting Little Bridge House, I had no real idea of what to expect, but now all I can say is what an amazing place."I was overwhelmed by what an incredible atmosphere there was throughout the whole building. "The care team were absolutely amazing and it was clear that they do such a wonderful job, they were all so smiley and friendly and their commitment and love for their job was so apparent."Elkie continued: "Being a mother of two healthy boys, I was touched by the strength of the parents I met on the day; it made me so thankful for what I have and I was humbled by their courage. "I felt uplifted by their strength and came away from my visit with such a smile on my face feeling so blessed with all that I have, but also safe in the knowledge that these families have the support of the most wonderful people at Little Bridge House."This is not the last Children's Hospice South West has seen of me, I will certainly be back to support them in whatever way I can.
