With record heatwaves choking India and a new report by the UN warning that four indicators of the climate crisis are at record highs, the urgency to act on climate change has never been greater.
As part of efforts to mobilise discussion about what can be done, a Braunton church is hosting an event in collaboration with the charity Christian Aid.
Local organiser, Margaret Robinson, said: "Join us, as Christ Church, Braunton, hosts the North Devon Talking Climate Justice Day on Saturday 29th October, from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm.
"We’ll come together for honest conversations about poverty and the climate crisis that stir up hope and move us into action. We’re part of thousands of climate justice conversations happening across Britain and Ireland.
"We'll hear from our guest “conversationalists” as they talk through how the church and the local community can respond and call for climate justice.
"To get involved and find out more please email margaret1212@outlook.com or contact Eventbrite."
The 'conversationalists' at the event will be:
To be followed by lunch and small group discussion time.
Katrine Musgrave, Christian Aid’s Church Engagement & Fundraising Officer for Devon & Cornwall added: "Every successful social movement started with a conversation - these conversations stirred anger, fuelled hope and inspired people to act.
"As the church, we need to have those honest conversations about poverty and the climate crisis that spur us into action for climate justice. The North Devon participants coming together at Christ Church Braunton will be doing just that!
"We are so grateful to our dedicated and passionate supporters for hosting these events in Devon!"
The organisers plan to work with Christian Aid to develop the ideas discussed at the meeting into actions that can be taken together.
