Last year's Barney to Beach gets under way
This spectacular journey, on Sunday, September 14, is now in its second year and will raise essential funds for the important work of both Families in Grief and Wave Project North Devon, supporting children and young people struggling with grief and other mental health challenges.
One of last year’s participants, who finished in the top three in 2024, said: “Taking part in Barney to Beach was an incredible experience. I loved the challenge, the stunning North Devon scenery and the amazing atmosphere created by everyone involved.
“Running for such a great cause made it even more special, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a rewarding event.”
Mental health concerns continue to rise among young people in the UK. One in five children experiences social, emotional, or mental health difficulties, and rates of teenage suicide and eating disorders have seen alarming increases in recent years.
Both Families in Grief and Wave Project North Devon step in when North Devon and Torridge families need support the most, delivering therapeutic interventions that set them up for a more positive future, and help them to manage the big feelings that come up after losing a loved one. Last year, more than 200 participants took on the challenge, including individuals, teams and even whole families completing the course together.
Jaz Bennett, co-ordinator of Wave Project North Devon, said: “We were thrilled to see such brilliant support from our wonderful North Devon community for this event in 2024.
“The beautiful route celebrates the stunning scenery of North Devon, and represents a challenging but achievable journey, not unlike that of the young people that both of our charities support.
“We really want to build on last year’s success, and invite you to join us from ‘Town to Tide’ in 2025.”
The two charities are seeking walkers and runners from across the area to take on the challenge. The 14km (just over 8.5 miles) event will start at Barnstaple Pannier Market, take in the stunning scenes of the estuary from the Tarka Trail, and finish through the dunes for a sea view at Crow Point.
Supported by a plethora of local businesses, Barney to Beach can be taken on as a running or walking challenge, with a route that is suitable for both seasoned running athletes and leisurely walkers alike.
With coach transport to the start line available from the finish for participants and a medal for everyone who completes the course, this promises to be another wonderful community event, an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful scenery of North Devon and support two local charities.
For younger ones, there is also a children’s race at Crow Point. Last year saw some exceptionally speedy young people crossing the line after an impressive dash over soft sand, and it is anticipated that the field might be even more competitive in 2025.

By signing up, you will be helping these charities to deliver their important local services. A member of a family supported by FiG said: “My daughter and I have much more open conversations about our loss and how it has affected us.
“FiG has helped us to heal a few of the wounds just by having the opportunity to talk, share, and carry out therapeutic activities.”
