Frustrated motorists have declared Barnstaple ‘gridlocked in every direction’ today (Friday).

Roadworks which saw the closure of Rolle Quay earlier seem to have been a major contributor to the chaos, with many taking to social media to say everywhere was at a standstill.

One social media user summed it up by saying: ‘It was absolutely crazy, Pottington, Sticklepath, Barnhenge, Pilton, all jammed’.

Rolle Quay and Braunton Road are now open again but the AA live traffic map is still showing bottlenecks around the usual hotspots such as Taw Bridge, the inner relief road, ‘Barnhenge’ roundabout and the A39 between Bishops Tawton and Roundswell roundabouts.

The latest comments from Facebook users suggest traffic has eased and is flowing better, but the school run is looming along with rush hour, as well as visitors arriving in North Devon for the weekend.

It is advisable to take extra time for your journey if you do need to travel.
