A large mural featuring more than 20 well-known children’s book characters has been official unveiled at South Molton Library.

The mural spans a stretch of garden wall that leads to the library doors and took local artist Peter Laws weeks of work to complete.

It includes a quote from Games of Thrones author George R R Martin and a variety of colourful and popular characters from the world of young fiction such as the BFG, Paddington and the Cat in the Hat.

Visitors have been commenting on the excellent job done by Peter, who is a valued and active member of the Friends of South Molton Library.

The mural was made possible by his many hours of voluntary work on the project and funded by South Molton Town Council.

An official ribbon cutting took place on Saturday, June 21, conducted by Town Clerk Andrew Coates and included speeches from Library Supervisor Alice Haynes and Peter himself, to the gathered crowd.

Afterwards children were given activity sheets to guess the characters from extreme close-up photos! Returned sheets entered them into a prize draw to win a £15 book voucher or chocolates. The Friends raised more than £70 from donations during the celebration.

Alice Haynes said: “We believe that these murals are a fantastic addition to our local community and hope to share them with as many people as possible.”
