Abbi has been training in North Devon to take on the Woolacombe to Croyde coastal walk and raise money for BASICS Devon, which she says saved her life.
A North Devon woman who had to learn how to walk again after a terrible car crash is taking on a big challenge to raise money for the charity she says saved her life.
Ten years ago, Abbi was left seriously injured and trapped in the wreckage of a car for nearly two-and-a-half hours.
She believes it was only the presence of a volunteer doctor from BASICS Devon that kept her alive and so this August on the 10th anniversary of the crash she is hoping to give something back.
She plans to walk a section of the coast path from Woolacombe to Croyde – six miles, which is a huge challenge for her after the injuries she suffered.
BASICS Devon is a volunteer organisation that provides specialist pre-hospital emergency care across the region. Its doctors often arrive at the scene of major incidents to support ambulance crews, bringing critical care directly to those in urgent need.
Among the clearest memories Abi has from the terrifying day of her ordeal was the presence of someone who climbed into the wreckage to be with her — someone who listened to her, relayed vital information to the fire crew, and provided calm reassurance.
It was only later she discovered he was a volunteer doctor from BASICS Devon.
“I literally owe him my life,” said Abbi, who does not wish to give her surname.
“It gave me huge comfort during those terrifying hours to know someone was right by my side, doing everything they could to help. I am eternally grateful for this amazing charity who do such incredible work.”
Despite still needing a crutch for walking outside the home, Abbi has been training for months, gradually building up her stamina on different terrain. The August walk will be her longest and most challenging yet.
She said: “As there was a time I wasn’t sure I’d ever walk again, a sponsored walk seemed appropriate.
“I've never taken walking for granted this past decade. It took me a long time to re-learn that skill. For most people, six miles might not sound like much, but for me, it’s a real marathon.”
