Resurfacing work will see a section of a main road into Barnstaple closed overnight for more than a week from Tuesday May 27.

The stretch of Braunton Road between Pilland Way at Pottington Industrial Estate and the Taw Bridge/Western Bypass junction will be shut from 7pm to 6am up to Thursday, June 5.

The work is part of Devon County Council’s scheme to improve and extend the existing bus lane on Braunton Road and will eventually prioritise buses through the Pilland Way and A361 signalised junctions. It is being funded through its Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding from the Department for Transport.

The council says this will separate the bus lane from general traffic to improve bus journey times by removing the need for buses and taxis to stop at the traffic lights, unless pedestrians and cyclists are crossing.

There will be no significant changes to the road layout for general traffic, with no alterations to the outbound lane heading towards Braunton and there will still be two lanes coming off the new bridge and turning right into Barnstaple with space to merge.

During the night-time closures the signed diversion route will be via Pilland Way, Riverside Road, A361, A3125, Alexandra Road, Rolle Street.
