Torridge District Council is appealing to the public to help find a loving home for a six-year-old Collie named Toby.

Toby was originally owned by an elderly couple, but after one of them sadly passed away, he was rehomed within the Torridge area.

Unfortunately, he escaped and was on the run for five weeks before being rescued.

Despite his ordeal, Toby was “very affectionate and sweet” when he was caught and taken to the kennels.

Caregivers say he “loves being outdoors and enjoys spending time sleeping on a duvet in the shade.”

He is described as a dog who “adores his walks and running but is equally happy to relax afterward.”

Toby will also “scrape on the door to let you know when he wants to go outside.”

His current caregivers describe him as “a beautiful and well-behaved dog.”

While he “isn't overly interested in other dogs,” he “enjoys attention and affection from people.”

Toby also loves to “run around and chase birds in the sky,” which is when “he might bark.”

With local rehoming charities currently at full capacity, Torridge District Council is reaching out to the community to help find Toby a home “where he can thrive and be cherished.”

The council is asking that only those who meet the following criteria get in touch:

  • Experience with rescue dogs or owning a border collie is essential, as border collies require extensive mental stimulation in addition to physical exercise.
  • Toby needs to be walked on a lead, and a new owner should have a secure garden until a bond is established.
  • Any prospective home must be located in the Torridge District or a neighbouring district and will be subject to a home visit inspection by the Environmental Protection Team.
  • A home with no cats.

The council said: “If you believe you can provide Toby with the caring and loving home he truly deserves, we would love to hear from you.”
