A special pop up cinema has opened in Barnstaple to play VE Day 80 tribute created by the same man behind the unique Ilfracombe Remembers film projected onto the Landmark towers in 2018.

The poignant Commemoration to Celebration 40-minute film is playing five times a day at Barnstaple Pannier market over three days until Saturday (May 10) as part of the town’s VE Day 80th anniversary events.

It is free to view but the pop-up blackout cinema only seats 63 and tickets must be booked in advance online – today (Thursday) is sold out but places are still available for Friday and Saturday.

The producer of this moving film, Chris Horrell, is renowned for his previous work on Ilfracombe Remembers 1918 - 2018, a film commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War, which was projected onto the outside cone of Ilfracombe’s Landmark Theatre on a cold November night in 2018.

Commemoration to Celebration is a powerful visual tribute and offers a timeline of key events from 1939 to 1945, featuring short videos of major battles and moments during the war, culminating in a heartfelt dedication to the country's 'bulldog spirit' and unwavering will to survive.

Chris said he has poured the same dedication into this new project, which he considers to be among his proudest achievements.

“The production of Ilfracombe Remembers was one of the proudest moments of my life,” Chris added.

“This latest film, dedicated to the Second World War, is up there with it.”

Other events at the Pannier Market for VE Day 80 include craft activities and historical talks up to Saturday, plus the VE80 Festival on Sunday (May 11) hosted by The Veterans Charity, a day filled with live music and entertainment, a street party, historical displays (both static and living history), food and drink vendors and more.
