Today, The Gazette is proud to launch a special online tribute to mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Throughout the day, we will be publishing a series of powerful VE Day stories online, showcasing first-hand memories from North Devon residents who lived through the war, as well as rare archive features that bring the region’s wartime experience to life.

VE Day, Victory in Europe Day, was first celebrated on 8 May 1945, marking the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany’s surrender.

As the 80th anniversary is today, communities across North Devon are coming together to reflect, remember, and celebrate the occasion.

A full schedule of commemorative events is planned across the district, including:

  • VE Festival in Barnstaple Pannier Market (Sunday 11 May), hosted by The Veterans’ Charity, with live music, living history displays, street party festivities, and local entertainment.
  • Free showings of a new commemorative film exploring North Devon’s wartime story.
  • Crafts, exhibitions and talks at Barnstaple Pannier Market (8–10 May).
  • Tommy Tea at South Molton Assembly Rooms on 8 May, featuring 1940s music, cream teas, dancing, and a raffle.
  • Special VE Day market in South Molton on 8 May, with themed stalls and performances.
  • Commemorative gathering at Ilfracombe’s Clapping Circle at 10.50am on Thursday 8 May, followed by reflection at 11am.
  • Cream tea dance and exhibitions around Queen Anne’s Café and The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon on 10 May.
  • Flag-raising ceremonies and bell-ringing as tributes across the district.

Mayor of Barnstaple, Janet Coates, said: “I am incredibly proud to see the Barnstaple community coming together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. This milestone offers us the opportunity to honour the bravery of the men and women who fought for our freedom. In a time of uncertainty, events like these remind us of the importance of unity and remembrance. Thanks to the dedication of local community groups and organisations like the Veterans Charity, we have a weekend of both celebration and reflection planned. As a Town Council, we will be holding a flag-raising ceremony in Rock Park between 9am – 10am, and I encourage residents and visitors to take part in commemorating this important occasion”.
