The by-election for Appledore on Thursday (April 17) saw Kerry O’Rourke become the 10th Liberal Democrat member on Torridge District Council.
Ms O’Rourke received 304 votes, beating Conservative candidate Carrie Woodhouse into second place. Independent Nigel Johnson polled 116 votes and Green Party candidate Keith Funnell 91. The turnout was 25.48%.
Kerry O’Rourke said: “I’m incredibly grateful to the people of Appledore for putting your trust in me — thank you!
“Stepping into politics is a new chapter, but standing up for those who feel unheard is something I’ve always been passionate about. I’m here to listen, to learn, and to work hard for our community. I won’t let you down.”
The winner is known for her work with voluntary groups in the area including a foodbank, Torrington’s Globe Hotel and as a trustee and presenter of Up Close Radio.
In 2024, she won Bideford Town Council’s Citizen of the Year award for her work on behalf of the town’s most vulnerable residents.
The by-election was called after former independent councillor Len Ford was jailed for 18 weeks for harassing a senior council officer and a campaign of abuse against her by email, leading to him being dismissed as a councillor.
