Barnstaple Town Council has announced that Rock Park has received a prestigious five-star rating at the South-West in Bloom 2024 Pride in Parks Award, recognising its community involvement, sustainable maintenance, and environmental excellence.
The award highlights the collective effort in preserving and enhancing the park, with particular praise for the commitment of local volunteers, Barnstaple in Bloom, the Town Rangers, and residents who have worked tirelessly to maintain this green space at the heart of the town.
The South-West in Bloom judges commended several key areas of excellence.
They particularly praised the collaboration between local groups, notably Barnstaple in Bloom’s partnership with Lampard Community School.
Other initiatives, such as regular park runs and the Picnic in the Park events, were also highlighted.
Rock Park's planting strategy was also recognised, with the judges noting the park’s focus on sustainability through the use of shrubs, perennials, and bulbs.
Native trees have been carefully preserved, and composting practices are in place to ensure the park's environmental responsibility.
The judges also praised the park's clean and well-maintained environment, with clear paths and a litter-free, graffiti-free space.
The condition of the children's play equipment was also commended.
Barnstaple's Mayor, Councillor Janet Coates, said: “We are delighted to receive this five-star rating from South-West in Bloom. This award reflects the hard work and passion of our community, volunteers, and Town Rangers. It’s wonderful to see our shared commitment to sustainability, conservation, and community engagement being celebrated.”
Wayne Palmer, Estates Manager for Barnstaple Town Council, said: “It’s a wonderful achievement for the team and residents to receive the award for Rock Park. Rock Park offers the perfect blend of nature, community, and accessibility, making it an inviting space for all.”
Frances Bell MBE, Chair of Barnstaple in Bloom, said: “We enjoy making our town as lovely as it can be. Everyone who volunteers for Barnstaple in Bloom sacrifices so much time and energy for the whole community.”
The Town Council said it remains committed to ensuring that Rock Park continues to thrive as an inclusive and environmentally responsible space for all to enjoy.
