Barnstaple’s iconic Banbury’s department store turns 100 this Friday and all are welcome to join the celebrations and enjoy two days of festivities, promotions and a special centenary discount.
Harking back a 10 years to the day when the High Street store first opened its doors, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9.15am this Friday (March 21) with Lady Arran, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon and the Mayor of Barnstaple in attendance.
The first 100 customers through the door will receive a celebratory glass of Prosecco and a centenary cupcake before they explore the anniversary promotions on offer. All staff will be decked out in period attire from 1925.
The independent store is still owned by the Banbury family and is now run by a fourth generation of the family.
Banbury’s is offering a 20% off promotion throughout its two day birthday festivities, on both Friday and Saturday.
It is also launching a centenary merchandise range after teaming up with local companies. This includes an exclusive 100 year candle and soap from Clovelly soap and centenary fudge bag from Roly’s fudge.
A proportion of the sales will go to three local charities close to the Banbury’s family and staff - plus there is a charity raffle with 50 luxury prizes to be won where all proceeds go to the three charities.
The chosen charities are North Devon Hospice, Devon Air Ambulance and Fern Centre cancer and wellbeing centre at North Devon District Hospital.
Managing Director Peter Banbury said: “We're thrilled to invite you to our Banbury’s 100th Birthday Big Weekend!
“Reaching this incredible milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our devoted customers, and we’re eager to share this moment with you all. As a token of our gratitude, enjoy 20% off throughout the store, along with a variety of special centenary promotions and products, all being released this Friday, 21st March.
“From our family to yours, we’re excited to celebrate a century of tradition, quality, and personal service. Join us in making this weekend unforgettable, and thank you again to all who have shopped with us—past, present, and future!”
Store mascot Banbury the Bear will be prowling in store and around the High Street across both days, plus on the Saturday a horse and carriage photo booth from Higher Bidacott Farm will be set up at front of the store.
All loyalty card customers can enjoy free tea and coffee in the café plus special centenary dishes on the menu.
