On March 6, World Book Day was celebrated.

Barnstaple Library has been running various initiatives this week in support of this annual event.

A Storytime session happens each Tuesday at the library.

This week’s reflection on World Book Day encouraged parents to keep their children connected with reading.

A costume swap has also been running since February 20.

Young people have donated their fancy dress costumes and picked up ones that have been contributed.

This initiative was set up in celebration of World Book Day after being successful as a Halloween project.

Many children have once again visited the library to get costumes to wear for the event.

Vouchers were also available on World Book Day for young people to pick up.

Alongside this event, reading schemes, writing workshops and author talks happen throughout the year at the library.

These events provide literary education and reading inspiration for the local community.

Lisa D’Alberti, Senior Supervisor for Barnstaple Library, spoke about the importance of the library in providing young people access to books.

She says: “In a library, every day is World Book Day, however as we know that half a million children in England don’t own a single book, it’s even more important to highlight the benefits of reading and libraries.  Libraries are a free resource with thousands of books to choose from. So, if you can’t afford to buy books, there’s no need to miss out, you can join your local library and start borrowing books straightaway.”

World Book Day contributes to the huge variety of events offered by the library throughout the year.

This work is so important in promoting everyone to experience the joy of reading and books.
