A fundraiser has been launched to support the Devon Air Ambulance following what was described as a serious road traffic accident involving a well-known former butcher.

Frankie Heard, the former owner of Frankie Heard’s Butchers in Westward Ho!, was involved in an accident on the North Devon Link Road a couple of weeks ago.

Described as a "well-known character" in the area, Frankie retired from the shop in 2010, which is now owned by Mark Stewart and Darren Phillips, who have both worked with him for 30 and 40 years respectively.

Mark and Darren have since organised the fundraiser to express their gratitude for the vital role the air ambulance played in Frankie's recovery.

After the accident, Frankie was attended by the air ambulance crew and flown to Plymouth for critical treatment.

Thankfully, he is now said to be on the road to recovery.

Mark and Darren told the Gazette: “As a result, we are now going to raise money in the shop and donate every penny to the Devon Air Ambulance, which is such an important asset to the area and possibly taken for granted at times.”

The pair set a £1,500 target on their GoFundMe page, but they have already surpassed that amount, with donations now exceeding £2,100.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support & donations from local businesses and individuals alike. Both online with the go fund me platform & within our business premises itself.

“Donations have been phenomenal and will all help this deserving charity continue to help others in the local area.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the emergency services for the great work they do,” said Mark and Darren.

The pair also noted that Frankie’s family would like to extend their thanks for all the kind messages of support.
